With television, phones, and even laptops, children these days are being fed information at a higher level than in any other generation. To counter this spoon-feeding, Chris Williams has written a lovely tale that fosters their imagination and provides them with a few resources to start them off.

Evan's holiday with his best friends Violet and Grayson is going well. They are enjoying breakfast, reminiscing on their past adventures, and making plans to swim. Evan's dad presents to them an amusing performance about pirates. They ask him a lot of questions before they head out to swim in the sea. They swim away from the shore to explore. They soon realise that they are far and they need to get back. However, fate has a different plan for them.

On their way back, an enormous wave intercepts and carries them off to the West Indies, where a magical adventure awaits. They get to interact with pirates, their nemesis Wrach, and so much more. Grab for your child a copy of Evan and Friends Meet the Pirates by Chris Williams so they can join in on this adventure.

It is the second instalment of the Evan and Friends series. I had a lot of fun reading it because it conjured up memories of the type of books I loved when I was a child. It is written in simple yet enjoyable English that is easy to understand. Chris has employed accurate descriptions that had me hooked from beginning to end. I love the fact that the main character is well-developed too. I could see the logic and passion in his actions. The images that accompany the book are colourful and informative. My favourite is the first one where Evan's dad has a saucepan on his head and a spatula in his hand. Chris has added nine black and white illustrations at the end of the book meant to indulge the child's imagination. They are perforated, so the reader is not encouraged to draw in the book. There is also a glossary at the end to help in building vocabulary. The primary target of this book is children aged between eight and twelve.

I did not find anything to dislike in the book. I found only four punctuation errors, indicating that the editing was well-done. I believe kids who love magic, pirates, and adventure would enjoy this book. It has lessons on friendship, following intuition, and bravery, which I found relatable. As a bonus, profits from this book will go to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity. I, therefore, rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
