Review of How To Be Successful
How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is a very well written, inspirational and motivating book full of leadership skills. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and it’s certainly one that I shall read again.
Unlike most self-help books this one focusses more on interviewing different successful people to tell their inspirational stories and give their nuggets of wisdom as to how they became successful. As a firm believer that to be the best you should listen to the best, I really enjoyed these interviews.
The author M. Curtis McCoy has quite the inspirational story himself. It's always nice to read about someone whom has overcome massive obstacles such as cancer and almost certain death to then go on to become very successful. That’s a kind of commitment to success that once you’re aware of gives you an empowered feeling. The author has achieved the impossible physically, which really does make one question their own life and what exactly is holding them back from personal success.
On the negative side there is an enormous amount of biblical content in this book. The book contains many quotes from the Bible, talk of how God and prayer saved someone and even a whole chapter interviewing a church founder and pastor of that church. As an agnostic minded person, this does not bother me, however I can see how this book would be unsuitable to those that are devout in religions other than Christianity.
I was also a little surprised with the entire chapter on the use of profanity in business situations and whether the use of profanity indicates intelligence or not. This chapter just didn’t seem to fit the rest of the book and so I question its relevance. The book itself contains no profanity.
I found very few minor grammatical errors and all of these were in the chapters focussing on what an interviewee had said, therefore I would say overall the book was very well edited, although I did not like the layout of my download. I found the letter-spacing to be a little excessive and disrupt the continuity of the read. This is possibly only an issue with my download and would not be an issue in the printed version.
To summarize, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The only reason I do not rate it 4 stars is that it is not suitable to people of all religions. I certainly recommend this book to all Christians that would like to improve their leadership skills and gain inspiration from other successful people. Overall a great read.
