When a large company decides to come in and start mining in part of the forest near when Tom lives, he and his two friends plan a trip to go up and visit the burial site of Tom’s grandad one last time. But on the eve of the trip Tom finds out something that will change everything for him. His ex-wife shows up and leaves the granddaughter he never knew existed on his porch. Faced with the decision of bringing Sarah on the trip or cancelling the trip all together, Tom’s friends convince him to bring her along. The 13-year-old is far from excited, but they get underway and by the end it seems that everyone has been changed. But who is leading who on this trip? Strong Heart shows that even older people have things to learn, and that younger people should try harder to connect with the older generation, because once those ties to the past are gone, it’s nearly impossible to get them back.

Charlie Sheldon manages to weave the magical aspects of Native life into the story with surprising ease. While the story takes place in two separate timelines, it never gets tangled. The lines between the two times are easy to follow and both leave you wanting to know more. His descriptions are concise but still leave room for a little interpretation. It isn’t hard for a reader to imagine the mountainside or camp locations, but they are also subdued enough that the reader would get lost in the details.

To be quite honest, I find myself unable to think of a single negative aspect of this book. Charlie Sheldon did a very good job of building his story and conveying each piece without stepping on anyone’s toes or losing reader’s interest. There were several things that were left open ended once the book was done, but they weren’t anything that can’t be tied up nicely in another book. Either way, cliffhangers are not something that can be considered negative in most cases. Just challenging for those who hate to wait.

Sheldon has presented a book with characters that you can’t help but root for, visuals that stick with you, and stories that won’t soon be forgotten. For all of that I rate Strong Heart at 4 out of 4 stars and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining, heart grabbing, magical story.

This book is one for all ages. Younger kids will bond with Sarah, the young teen struggling to find her place in this world. Older readers will bond with Myra, William, and Tom as they all learn how to function in a world that doesn’t always stop and consider smaller entities when aiming for progress.
