[Following is a volunteer review of "Blockhead" by Kyle J.S. Bardell.]
This book, by Kyle J.S. Bardell, titled Blockhead, is surprisingly refreshing and creative story about a young girl named Bronco. The tale begins with her at her home, dealing with her particular life situations, and expands into her adventures in trying to find her place in her world. She stands up for herself by using her observational skills, and by listening to her elders. Ultimately, she learns she is designated for a certain position and job for her life. She approaches the upcoming situations and obligations with intelligence and a certain fearlessness that makes the reader more interested in how she handles her adventures. it brings to mind all of us human beings facing changes and making new decisions.
The book's descriptions are so vivid that the person reading is able to really visualize the scenes in one's mind. For example, chapter 17 portrays a great feeling for her environment when describing her first experience of attending a festival. The descriptions of venue, the clothes people were wearing, including what the participants had to eat really brought her personal experience to life.
On the other hand, the terms first used within the first chapter to describe her intimate living situation took a bit of time to get used to, or understand. But that was to let the reader know that you are taken on an unusual adventure. In addition, you as a reader are left wanting more, just to find what happens next. For example, Bronco jumps on her horse and gallops off during chapter 19, and it becomes like a mini cliffhanger. Where is she going and why?
I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It is a wonderfully descriptive story. The author has a gift with words, and wraps a person into caring about Bronco's life. The story was very interesting.
I would think anyone interested in science fiction would end up enjoying this. There were some fresh ideas that were interesting. Descriptions of the buildings and aspects of some new technology caught the imagination. It is a surprisingly unique endeavor. As a science fiction reader myself, it is a treat to immerse oneself into a new world.
As the story progressed the reader's curiosity was piqued by what was going to happen next. So I admire the Author for bringing fresh ideas and vivid descriptions for a person to enjoy. I believe it is worth a person's time to partake of this story. You will walk away from this wanting more, and waiting for hopefully a next installation of this book. Truly, Blockhead has something a bit different to offer.
