Review of Barbra Streisand: On the Couch

[Following is a volunteer review of "Barbra Streisand: On the Couch" by Alma H. Bond, Ph.D..]
Barbra Streisand is the most successful female recording artist of all time. She also now has the longest streak of number one music albums in history; dating back approximately fifty years! In Barbra Streisand: On the Couch, she shares the most terrifying storms she has survived, during her psychoanalysis therapy sessions with Doctor Darcy Dale. This book by Alma H. Bond is her latest installment of her On the Couch series.
The novel begins with Doctor Darcy Dale rushing home to prepare for a party hosted by a friend when she receives a surprise visit from the legendary Barbra Streisand. Dale is a well-known, trailblazing, Manhattan psychiatrist who has received glowing praise from the likes of Marilyn Monroe and charges exorbitant prices for her sessions. As Dale goes deep into the heart and mind of one of America's last remaining superstars, the two become friends.
I enjoyed how this book allowed me to get to know Barbra Streisand. Her brutally honest, feisty and strong personality were brilliantly captured by the author. Bond was successful in showcasing Barbra's professional highs and lows. She walked me through every stage of Barbra's acting and musical careers. As you read this series, you are able to see the drama and the emotional rollercoaster that unfolds during psychoanalysis therapy sessions.
The writer's remarks are incredibly descriptive. Barbra's style of touching her naturally glistening hair with long fingers was like calming a weeping infant, and she had a stunningly distinctive face with sculptured features that would grab any observer like a magnet, she said. I would never have discovered famous World War II celebrities like Jule Styne, Silvana Mangano, Fanny Brice, and Pascal the poet if it hadn't been for the book.
Except for a few swear words strewn about there isn't much to hate about the book. The therapy sessions between Doctor Dale and Barbra Streisand were far too interesting for me to be bored. The Barbra Streisand: On the Couch book is a motivational read. Barbra's youthful struggles and tribulations did not break her spirit, rather, they fueled her desire to prove the world that they were wrong about her.
This book receives four out of four stars from me. Barbra's character in the novel was one of my favorites. She's a hilarious woman with the most clever sense of humor you will ever meet. When she talked about her past relationships and musical experiences with Darcy, I couldn't help but chuckle. I can picture myself re-reading this book several times.
This book is best suited for people who are at an emotional crossroads as a result of terrible occurrences in their childhood. Many people who are on a quest for self discovery will benefit from this book. Because of some sexual references, this novel is not suitable for a young audience.
