Pets can be so adorable. Unfortunately, their relatively short lifespan means that we can't have the pleasure of their company as long as we would want. The Spiritual Dog: "Bear" by J. Wesley Porter relates the emotional life story of a pet named Bear.

Bear is a Shih Tzu mixed-breed dog found at an animal shelter. He was quite lovable at first sight, and soon, he was fully integrated into his adopted family. Bear was caring, understanding, and sympathetic. He was also full of life and energy. It was no wonder that his family became so attached to him.

This children's book is easy to read and understand because the sentences in the narrative are short and devoid of difficult grammar. Many kids find pets amusing; therefore, Bear's story might pique their interest. The author's love for Bear stands out in the book. Also, the emotional scenes in the story remained in my memory.

My most favorite part of this book is the numerous pictures of Bear. Each picture reflected his mood and flowed smoothly with the narrative. However, there were some awkward-sounding sentences in the narrative. For instance, a sentence on page 66 read, 'As Bear gotten older, his fur color started changing from jet-black to grayish-white fur look.' I also observed that the book had very few lessons for readers. The entire narrative seemed like a summary of Bear's life without a focus on any aspect. The concluding page of the book highlighted the central lesson, but it seemed inadequate. This is my most disliked aspect. However, Bear's interesting life story is sure to catch the fancy of kids.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars due to the dislikes stated above. It was professionally edited. Bear's beautiful personality brought life to the story. Pet owners can also learn how to show love to their pets. Children between the ages of 3 to 9 years would find this book interesting.

This sounds like a lovely story that children will enjoy. Most young readers enjoy animal stories, and the fact that it is a true story makes it more appealing. I am glad the author included the photos to help children have a visual of the main character. Great review! Thanks for presenting this book.

This sounds a really emotional story of Bear, the dog. Short life span of pets really seems unfair sometimes. Thanks for the great review.

Thanks for your informative review. It seems the book is more of a record about the author and his beloved dog than an inspirational one, but I guess animal lovers won't mind that.

It's nice to have a lesson in a children's book. However, that's not a deal breaker. It sounds like a cute book. Thanks.

Yes, one gets terribly attached to pets and inevitably there is a goodbye attached. Thanks for a great review.

Pets can truly make a difference in one’s life. I believe quite many animal owners have had their own “Bear”! This book seems like an adorable tribute to this dog who was special to its owner. Thanks for a nice review!

Such a lovely review. Pets hold a special place in every human's heart, and I think that this would be very sentimental and lovely. Thanks for your review.
