What is family? Several dictionaries and sources would provide various definitions based on different orientations and beliefs. We would agree that family, however, comprises a lot more than blood relationships. In Different Family Structures, Stallworth Mildred discusses various family structures, their importance, and their effects on family members.

Mildred starts by explaining the importance of family in our lives. She goes further to explain that family can be by choice. Our friends, colleagues, or employers can become family when they provide the same love, support, and companionship our family provides. This book contains extensive definitions of the various types of family, family values, and family roles. Is single parenthood advisable? What family structure is suitable for the well-being of children? What are the necessary values that should be imbibed in members of a family? Read this book to find out.

Different Family Structures is a 66-pages book consisting of 10 chapters. It possesses a good number of positive qualities. It was written in a simple and explanatory manner that would intrigue any reader.  The author sends her message across in a clear and precise way to keep the reader engaged. She talks about the roles of family members in the family and how family structures affect the future of children raised in these structures.

The book contains quotes made by people on each family structure the author discusses. These quotes are subjective and are based on what the speaker thinks about the subject at hand. The book also covers parenting styles, divorce, and single parenting. The author manages to find the line between traditional family values and structures and emerging structures, providing both positive and negative changes. Most importantly, she discusses the importance of communication, a concept I believe is not only important in our families but all kinds of relationships. I did not find a lot of errors in this book. Therefore, it was professionally edited.

The book passes its message across in a well written, explanatory, and detailed manner that I could not find anything to dislike about it. I must commend the author’s work in discussing an issue of high importance in society. It was highly educative. I rate this book four out of four stars. I did not rate it lower because I did not find any reason to. I recommend this book to people looking forward to starting a family, members of an already existing family, and everyone interested in acquiring knowledge on the subject.

Thanks for your interesting review. I agree that we don't need blood relations to create a family. It's love that counts.

I have also read the book and I think it's very educative and informative. Most especially the classification of parenting style, I found that part of the book fascinating. Thank you for your interesting review!

A book about family structures? I've never encountered one. I believe I would like to educate myself on the subject as the book already looks very distinctive. Thanks for the review though!
