This loving masterpiece about cancer and letting go is a prodigious tribute to Bruce Hoben and the admiration he shared with his loved ones. Written from the perspective of Susan Ducharme Hoben, Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss is a detailed non-fiction novel about Bruce’s gracious acceptance of his terminal cancer and the heart-wrenching adventure of Susan and him saying goodbye to the lives they had together in preparation for his death. They take one last tour of their lives together, traveling to their favorite places, visiting family, and doing all of the things they loved the most, always maintaining a uniquely understanding and accepting perspective of a difficult process.

This book deserves 4 out of 4 stars for multiple reasons, not least its exceptional editing. Throughout the story, you get to see and feel the strength of a brilliant, detail-oriented, passionate, and selfless woman. She is truly a great inspiration from the beginning of her journey, that starts with a celebration of life that she carries to the very end. Her writing is riddled with such great detail that it brings life to her story. From the in-depth description of an office plant and her thoughts on it to the heartfelt admiration she has for her husband's character, her novel reads like a captivating tale that completely engages the reader.

Anyone going through the trauma of terminal illness, about to lose a loved one, or worries about the end of life would greatly benefit from Susan’s story. She provides an invaluable inside perspective of the entire process from start to finish, including indispensable advice such as how to break the news to loved ones and keep them up to date and who should get backups of legal documents.

Dying Well is also an insightful philosophy book for anyone interested in how perspective can change a situation. The lessons that can be learned by reading this text inspire the reader to look at the importance of each moment and the people they spend those moments with, truly giving them a profound appreciation of life. Furthermore, it inspires the same appreciation of death and the importance of a ritual to ease ourselves and our loved ones into it.

The only difficulty in reading this book is its ability to provoke great emotion. Tears will flow freely as you celebrate the joyous occasions, mourn the heavy moments, and feel the passing of each milestone in this tremendous story of celebration and letting go.
