Thunder and Lightning, They’re Not So Frightening by JD Schmith is a children’s story about William. Every evening he watches the lights come on in the houses in the valley below, but this evening dark clouds were rolling in. The wind picked up and thunder began to shake the house, scaring William. His father comes in to comfort him, and William asks, “What makes thunder and lightning?” Will his father’s answer help William’s fear?

This was a short, sweet picture book that addresses the common childhood fear of thunderstorms. The author included detailed but simplified scientific explanations of what lightning is and how it results in thunder. These explanations were informative and interesting but would still be digestible for younger children.

There were pictures on every page that were done in a unique style. The background was painted, but William looked like he was photographed. The colors were lovely, and I really enjoyed how the clouds and lightning were painted. There were also several pictures of William sitting in his father’s lap that were quite cute.

I didn’t dislike anything about this work. I only found one small error in the book. The author did a good job at pacing the story as well as introducing the setting and William in just a few pages. Several great adjectives were used to describe the storm and the way it affected the area, which really brought the story to life.

I’m rating Thunder and Lightning, They’re Not So Frightening by JD Schmith a 4 out of 4 stars. It is a short and well-written children’s story that addresses the fear of thunderstorms. I felt that it was relatable and included great explanations for the origin of lightning and thunder. This work would be perfect for anyone who has children in their life, especially if those children are scared by large storms. I would have loved this book when I was young.

the incorporation of the different art sounds like a fun mix for the illustrations. i was never scared of thunder growing up but i can see how this book would be good for children who are.
