Shadow’s Adventure Home by Kathy Kovar is a children’s story about Shadow the cat. Shadow’s family moves to a house in the country, and after a bit of adjustment time, he grows to love it there. One day, the front door is left open, and Shadow finally gets the opportunity to chase one of the birds he loves watching! He runs after the bird but can never quite catch it. When he finally gives up the chase, he realizes that nothing is familiar, and he doesn’t know where home is anymore. Will Shadow be able to find his home again? What sort of adventures and dangers will he encounter?

There were many illustrations included throughout the book, and they were all quite lovely. It looked like they were done in colored pencils; the colors were vibrant, and Shadow was fat and cute. There were also some surrealist elements to the art that I enjoyed.

The author did an excellent job at including typical cat behaviors like watching birds from windows, loving boxes, and being nervous after a move. The misadventures of Shadow were realistic and not too sad for children to enjoy. The work also had a happy ending and a simple vocabulary, making it more suitable for children.

There was only one thing that I disliked. I read this book on my Kindle, and many of the illustrations came before the page of text that described them. This interrupted the flow of the story for me overall. I only found one small error in this work, so it seemed to have been professionally edited.

I’m giving Shadow’s Adventure Home by Kathy Kovar a 4 out of 4 stars rating. The story was simple, short, and realistic, and the illustrations were unique and beautiful. This work would be suitable for anyone who has children in their life especially if they love cats or have had a pet go missing.
