I have always wondered how writers come up with good fictional stories. Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide by William H. Coles is a non-fictional book written to guide aspiring authors on how to write a book. This book would also help already existing authors by making them better.

This book has two parts. Book one narrates what an author should do to develop his or her characters, and what the audience reading a book can expect from a character. As a writer, the complexity and uniqueness of your characters determine how your book would sound to your readers. Character development is very essential in fictional writing. The author also guides her readers through how to develop characters while writing. According to the author, a good character must be imagined and created, not discovered and described. The importance of conflict and action in literary fiction cannot be overemphasised. The author also stated the unlimited ways a writer could apply conflict and action while writing. The importance of humour while writing was also explained. The author also went ahead and told us why literary stories tend to fail. Book two is a more detailed part of book one. The author, in the second part of the book, stated guidelines for achieving the mentioned principle of writing.

I liked this book a lot – I learned a lot from this book. I can now try writing a fictional story after what I learned from this book. For an author to make a good book, there are certain things he or she should put into consideration. I have always known three points of view that authors use when telling a story, but I learned about the narrator's point of view while reading this book. From this masterpiece, I now know why I haven't succeeded in writing a good book, and what it would cost me to write one.

There was nothing to hate about this book. This book served as an eye-opener to me. I wish I had read this book earlier before now. This is the perfect book for every author that wishes to make their writing better. At first, I thought this book wouldn't make sense to me; but the author proved me wrong. I'm going to give this book to my friends that want to start writing fictional books. I liked the fact that in every chapter, there was a summary to help. The fact that he used short stories for illustrative purposes made understanding this book very easy.

I'm rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found no errors in this book. This shows that it was exceptionally well-edited. I would recommend this book to authors and aspiring authors.
