Review of Toni the Superhero

[Following is a volunteer review of "Toni the Superhero" by R.D. Base.]
The typical children’s book that we see often tells stories about characters who must solve problems that comes up in their lives. This problem-solution plot is meant to teach young children morals and lessons for them to use in life. Contrary to this, Toni the Superhero , is a simple story intended to teach children how to read. Written by R.D. Base, the story depicts a young boy named Toni. Toni is a Superhero who has many different interests and likes.
Of the interests he has, none are saving the world or having superpowers like the typical superhero character would have. Instead, he participates in realistic, everyday activities, such as singing, helping his mom, cleaning, and eating. This characterization makes it easy for a young child to relate—a character in a book that does the same types of things they do and models the typical daily activities and chores of a child of that age.
Additionally, using a young character allows for young readers who are learning to read to be able to connect with the character. Further, creating a character who is a superhero peaks the interests of young readers. The book is brief with easy-to-read sentences that allow for a nice introduction into learning how to read.
Overall, the book does not have any negative aspects. The use of intricate illustrations by Debbie J. Hefke, simple words and sentences, and a character that interests the reader shows that this book did what it intended to—to teach young children how to read.
This book earned 4 out of 4 stars. There were no errors and it clearly appealed to a young audience of children at the beginning stages of learning how to read. As the first book of a series, Toni the Superhero is a great choice for a child looking to learn to read independently.
