Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide by William H. Coles

Many people enjoy reading literary stories because they get to experience various adventures through the characters in the book. A great story takes the readers to a different world where they are entertained and they become one with the characters in the book. An author must therefore be able to write a book that captures the heart of its readers and one that is remarkable. However, most times authors fail to express ideas in their stories well and end up frustrating the readers.

William Coles has provided techniques an author may apply when writing a book that entertains, engages and provides enlightenment to its readers. He explains that a book may be good but too complex for the readers to understand and therefore ends up confusing the audience. The guide contains different topics concerning literary writing starting from the questions that writers need to ask themselves before they decide to start a story. When and why the story begins? How will it end and what will happen in between the story?

I found the book intriguing especially where William Cole explains why a reader loses concentration when reading a book. I like how he has provided useful information on various topics. An example is a reminder to writers not to forget about characters they introduced earlier in a story. Also, there are some short explanatory essays provided in the guide that offer further details on what is required of a good writer. Each topic has been well explained and the paragraphs are short and precise.

There is no negative aspect that I found with the book. I enjoyed the guide and found the summary given at the end to be thoughtful. Readers who want to implement the guidelines will have an easier time locating them in the summary part.

I believe Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide was professionally edited as I only found a few minor errors. I rate this book a 4 out of 4. I am confident that this rating is well earned because of how well the author discussed every topic. The explanations were top notch and were easy to understand.

I recommend this book to anyone who is considering writing a good literary story. I also recommend this book to writers who are struggling with constructing the perfect kind of literal stories that will be enjoyed by their audience.
