Review of Hattie Vavaseur

[Following is a volunteer review of "Hattie Vavaseur" by M. Rebecca Wildsmith.]
After attending a funeral ceremony, Hattie, an elderly lady, realized something was amiss. She could not recognise her chauffeur, Bertram, until he reminded her of his name. When they arrived at their destination, Hattie did not recognize the ill-kept house. She could not remember if the house belonged to her or to a friend whom she had arranged to stay with. Hattie was horrified to note, in the morning, that her room was filled with pink. She knew she hated pink and did not understand why she was put in this room. Hattie thought she might be suffering from memory loss due to age, but despite the panic that followed this realization, refused to ask for help. When Bertram came to take her to the town for an appointment, she did not remember the appointment, but hid her confusion and went with him. Bertram took her to a psychic medium, ignored her protests, and forced her to see the occultist. There, she learnt a harrowing truth about herself.
Hattie Vavaseur is a book of fiction set in classical Britain. Written by M. Rebecca Wildsmith, this book delves into the paranormal from an unusual angle. It examines themes of magic, death, and what happens after death from a unique perspective. There are also sub-themes of greed, friendship, loyalty, familial abuse, heartbreak, psychics and mental illness. All these are worked under an overarching theme of love. There are also beneficial lessons in this book about life and how should be lived.
I enjoyed many aspects of this book. I liked how the book was written in simple, flowing language that made reading easy. At the same time, the book contained difficult vocabulary that helped me learn unfamiliar words without hindering my understanding or enjoyment in any way. I loved learning about how people lived in the past when they had no electricity, aeroplanes or mobile phones and had to travel by sea, and communicate over long distances by telegram. The telegram seems rather tedious, by the way. All the characters were unique and interesting; the author did a fantastic job developing them. My favorite character is Teddy, the smart and mischievous little boy. The editor did a great job and the absence of errors made reading easy for me.
I disliked nothing about this book. I enjoyed it so much that I deliberately slowed down my reading so that the book would not end quickly.
I give this book four out of four stars. I recommend it to lovers of classical stories with a touch of the paranormal. Those who enjoy fiction, romance, or any good story will enjoy reading this book. However, those who do not enjoy books in this genre might want to stay away.
