[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: Someone Else’s End by Matthew Tysz is the introductory novel in the We are Voulhire series. In the book, Galen Bary is a young man living in the Lands of the Princes, a group of islands ravaged by civil war. A distant uncle gives Galen the opportunity of a lifetime by bequeathing him a forge. Hopeful for a better life, Galen moves from his war-ridden homeland to run his new forge. But destiny has more in store for the young man than forgery.
Voulhire is a magnificent kingdom at the height of prosperity. But the glorious kingdom faces many adversaries. The King of Voulhire faces many challenges. The most mysterious adversary is Meldorath, a prolific magician who still holds sway over the kingdom. Another powerful foe is Riva Rohavi, a man intent on taking over Voulhire. With all these challenges, obstacles, and a dangerous monster, Voulhire finds itself in need of a hero. Who would have thought that Voulhire would find its hero in a young refugee?
The novel has a lot of positive aspects. The most alluring element is the creativity woven into the plot. The author develops a fantasy world of magical creatures and people. I love the world Tysz creates. It’s like an alternate dimension that is similar to our reality but deliciously different and engaging. The character development is commendable. I gradually learned about characters and their backstories. The well-rounded characters got me invested in the story, and I found myself rooting for some of them. I loved Galen and found myself invested in characters like Meldorath. I appreciate a book that fleshes out individual character stories while tying them to the overall plot.
There is only one thing I dislike about the novel. The first half of the book has little adventure and action. However, the second half made up for the first half with dynamic adventure and action scenes. I also think the editing is professional. I did not notice any grammatical or typographical errors.
We are Voulhire: Someone Else’s End by Matthew Tysz is an incredible fantasy book. The storyline is engaging and thrilling. The novel’s characters are interesting and well-rounded. The novel is a good introduction to the series. I will definitely look for the other novels in the series. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to readers who like fantasy novels with magical elements. There are some violent scenes and profanity in some sections of the story. Therefore I think the book is better suited to young adults over sixteen years and adults.
