[Following is a volunteer review of "Demon Freaks" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
Demon Freaks is written by J.R.R.R.(Jim) Hardison. It tells the story of four youngsters who are about to take an important school exam and need to revise. Passing this exam is extremely important if they want to go ahead with their college plans. They do not want to end up working in their parents’ McDonald restaurant for the rest of their lives. Twin brothers, Bing and Ron Slaughter decide to go and study with their friend Meat, at an isolated cabin in the middle of the woods. Kaitlyn is due to meet them later. However, when their history teacher arrives uninvited and wants to murder them with a dagger, they know that their evening will not be spent revising for their test. Bing, Ron, Meat and Kaitlyn will find themselves having to foil an evil plot. They will need to protect each other from dark and mysterious forces. Will the four friends be able to fight the evil forces and resume their studies?
The main characters are Bing, Ron, Meat and Kaitlyn. They are good friends and are part of a band. Bing is skinny and not very brave. He is very organized and likes to plan everything. Ron looks quite different as he is athletic- looking and likes to wear fashionable clothes. The two brothers have a close relationship. They are average students as they can easily get distracted. Meat is disorganized and unfocused. He is the class-clown. Finally, Kaitlyn is very intelligent and believes she is knowledgeable about psychic powers. She can stay calm in all circumstances. The four friends are loyal and will go to great lengths to protect each other. They will develop qualities during the evening. However scared they become, they will always keep their sense of humor. There are other characters in the story such as the twins’ parents, the history teacher and other people who have a link with the dagger. The dagger is called Groomgerock and has a wicked sense of humor.
The story is well written and exceptionally well edited. It is written in the third person and describes the adventures of the four teenagers. The style is direct and has a very good pace. It can be hilarious at times. The reader enters a world of paranormal activity, wizards, spell chambers, scary bloodthirsty creatures and demons. The style is imaginative and creative. The genre of this book is fantasy and will appeal to an audience who enjoys a story about magical and supernatural elements. However, it is not dark and has numerous funny moments. It is easy to warm to the four characters and to wonder what will happen to them. There were surprises about some of the characters. The ending was unexpected.
I enjoyed this book. The pace and the humor kept me entertained. This book was easy to read. The characters were all likeable. I wanted a good ending to the story and hoped the main characters could pass their important test! The wackiness of the story made it light and exciting.
There is nothing I disliked about this book. I rate it four out of four stars.
