American River: Tributaries is a historical novel about three families; the Ashidas, the McPhalans, and the Morales. The book begins by introducing the families' ancestors and how they came to occupy the land they were on. Their stories are filled with resilience and grit as they all struggle to survive when the odds are stacked against them. Eventually, the ancestors pass on, and the inheritors take over. Each family makes do with the hand that has been dealt to them. Some people struggle while others thrive, demonstrating how different we all are and how we can never be equal. The story touches on a variety of major themes, including family and friendship, racial discrimination in America, homosexuality, drugs and addiction, and the journey to recovery from drugs.

What I liked about the book was how well it flowed, and I never felt lost. It was easy to identify with the characters, and I kept hoping for the best for them even though it was clear that everything would go wrong. Julian's problem, and how he couldn't seem to catch a break, broke my heart. And when he did catch a break, it was short-lived. I also liked how Marian pursued her dreams despite the fact that her husband didn't recognize her talent. Mallory M.O'Connor elicited a range of emotions in me; at one point, I was nursing a broken heart, and at another, I was swooning over something sweet that had occurred. As a self-professed romantic, I have to admit that I enjoyed the subtle sex scenes. That was a fantastic touch, in my opinion.

I also liked how the author explored the theme of teenage romance. The couple in the story comes from different social classes and racial backgrounds. Their love was pure and innocent, and I sincerely hoped it would last forever. I also liked the book title's wordplay, the fact that the river has three tributaries that join to form the American River, and the fact that the story focuses on three families who are somehow connected.

What I didn't like about the book was the fact that it left me hanging. Despite knowing from the start that the book was part of a series, I was left wanting. I wished I could get my hands on the next book right away so I could get some answers to some of the questions I had. I'm hoping to finish all of the books so that I can satisfy this desire within me.

For a variety of reasons, I would give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. For instance, there are no errors, and the story flows smoothly. It is also captivating and engaging from the first to the last page. I would recommend this book to fans of historical romance and books about family and friendship. Also, if you want to read about people who seize opportunities, this book is for you. It introduces you to amazing characters who rose to the occasion.
