[Following is a volunteer review of "Bird in a Snare" by N.L. Holmes.]
Bird In A Snare by N.L Holmes is another chronology of the character Hani and his secretary Maya as they embark on yet another adventure in ancient Egypt. The book which is set around 1350 BCE, is a mixture of fiction and realistically accurate facets of the past Egyptian way of life. The story starts with Hani, once again tasked with investigating a murder, this time of a rebel group leader, the Hapiru king.
However as the story progresses, it becomes more than about the murder investigation and several other themes are introduced in the story. The reader gets to witness the tale evolve to include other details such as the death of the current king and the civil unrest that soon follows. The political unrest and new policies introduced ruffle feathers among Hani, his family and some of his colleagues. Furthermore, in this instalment, the reader gets to witness Hani’s struggle juggling the demands of his job with his family duties.
A smaller but significant theme of a budding romance between Hani’s secretary Maya with his daughter Sat-hut-haru, adds a lighter and sweet note to the novel which further contributes to the richness of the story, much to the enjoyment of the reader. The sense of danger in the book witnessed as Hani carries out his investigation is intriguing and is what one would expect from N.L Holmes.
Moreover, this novel is a vast source of knowledge for those interested in learning about the ancient Egyptian way of life, from their religious beliefs to their family set ups, as well ad the various customs that were observed during that era. The way the story is structured is superb and makes this novel a real page turner.
Bird In A Snare, is well written, well edited with minimal typos. The book contains no erotic scenes but does contain instances of Non-borderline profanity. There is not much swearing in the book and the little swearing that occurs only serves to make the story more enjoyable. Although the book mentions ancient Egyptian religion numerous times, I believe it is only to make the story more enjoyable, hence this book can be read by anyone in spite of religion or race.
I have decided to give Bird In A Snare a 4 out of 4 stars rating because it is enjoyable and flawless. It is an excellent piece of literature.
