[Following is a volunteer review of "Demon Freaks" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
Bing and Ron Slaughter encounter a storm while driving to a friend's house to study all night for the SAT scheduled for the following morning. Although the weather forecast failed to mention a storm, lightning filled the sky. After the power goes out, they stare outside the window along with their friend Meat, amazed by the incredible strength of the storm. Out of nowhere, a guy comes flying towards the window, covered in blood. It is their history teacher.
Demon Freaks is J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison’s second novel. It belongs to the genre (C/T/M/H). Twins Bing and Ron Slaughter are trying to ace their tests to attend college and not end up working at Mcdonald's like their parents. The whole story takes place the night before their quiz.
Their friends, Meat and Kaitlyn, are kidnapped by golfers. The local Golfers' Association Club turns out to be a group of wicked wizards. They are planning to sacrifice Meat and Kaitlyn to summon a demon. The twins try figuring out how to save their friends but encounter multiple life-threatening challenges. A mind-controlling dagger, hysterical golfers, and servants of darkness represent the unusual forces that fight against each other to achieve their insane goals. The group of friends is consistently in a problematic situation and continuously has to think of ways to escape and survive the madness. All with the addition of having to revise for their wicked test.
The author performed an outrageous job at delivering the theme just right, and the illustrations throughout the book perfectly conveyed the idea that it was a horror/comedy book. The author succeeded in mentioning a joke amidst the tension and terror. The dialogue was well-written; I kept track of who spoke even in a group. The whole story is fast-paced. I enjoyed how initially, all the group wanted was to study. Only to find themselves inside a summoning ritual, then trying to catch up with a possessed dagger. The story constantly has something unpredictable happening. It left me wondering what was next. I frequently felt the tension and suspense and became engaged. The author did a great job of showing how the events affected the twins and their friends and made them question their life choices. I admired how the brothers had to make plans and decisions together. Despite the fighting, it highlighted the bond they had as brothers. I appreciated the sense of brotherhood and friendship present throughout the book. The author executed an excellent job with the buildup of tension towards the end. The worldbuilding, character development, and sequence of events were remarkable. The events that occurred kept me reading non-stop. I genuinely was surprised by the ideas presented by the author; it showed how he had out-of-the-box thinking and had fun writing his book. The plot twists were marvelous, yet I am unable to mention them.
I failed to encounter anything I disliked in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed everything till the end. I give this book a rating of four out of four stars, as I couldn't find any negative aspects. There was some profanity and use of cursing but no sexual content. The book was exceptionally edited; I failed to find errors. I recommend this book for fans of stories regarding demons, paranormal activity, and anyone who likes fast-paced books. One thing that readers should consider is that the book contains some religious content. It was fine by me, although it might be unlikable for someone else. Ultimately the book is about demons, spirits, and rituals.
