Wonks is a historical novel based on the Japanese invasion in the Philippines during World War II creatively written by William Reese.

William used a twelve-year-old kid, Johnny Oldfield, to narrate the cruelty during the Japanese invasion. The setting of the story was inside the Internment Camp Number One in the Philippines. This is where Johnny learned all the valuable lessons he needs to know in life from the people surrounding him. Even though Johnny was separated from his dad due to the said situation, he was surrounded by different types of people with different types of stories to offer who loves him. These people witnessed Johnny grow up; they are a big part of the good and bad memories of our protagonist.

Ruth, Johnny's mother, called Johnny a wonk because of the resemblance of their characteristics. Wonk is a Chinese yellow dog who always runs just like Johnny.

My favorite part of this book is it was narrated from the point of view of a twelve-year-old kid. I liked how the author used Johnny to show the innocence of the kids and how they can be observant of their surroundings. It also features some of the funny sides of the kids. It also brings back my childhood memories and some of the habits I used to do when I was a child.

The author sprinkled treasures all over the book. He inserts life lessons from time to time in different ways possible. Some are easy to find while others need some cultivation to be treasured.

Knowing that this book is based on William's personal experience made me feel the scenarios more realistic. It made the lessons and scenes more relevant.

William amazingly crafted this book. I didn't find any errors, it was edited well. There's nothing to dislike about this book.

Considering all the positive aspects of this book, I gladly rate this book a complete rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This book is highly recommended to readers who are fond of reading historical novels. I also recommend this to war stories lovers, they'll find Johnny's story amazing. Since this book tackles a story during World War II, readers who experienced it may not find the book amazing because of their bad experiences so this book may not be for them. I also recommend this book to readers who want to reminisce about their childhood since it was from the perspective of a kid.

It's interesting to read stories based on someone's experience in war and imprisonment. This shows the ugly face of those who don't mind to imprison and harm many innocent lives. Thanks for the great review.
