Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is the eight in The Inca Cat Detective Series by R.F. Kristi. Inca, the leader of the team of animal detectives (including two dogs, a hamster, and several cats), describes their latest adventure while accompanying their human Mom on a trip to South Korea. Their adventure kicks off when a rival chef tries to steal her newly created cheese.

Once in Korea there is no end to the excitement. Between site seeing and the competition they step up to support their human friends when others threaten them and decide to protect them from venturing into the North without permission—they make the dangerous journey themselves, in their quest to unite their new Korean friends and their animals.

This is a very enjoyable story with lovely illustrations. It could be instrumental in teaching young children about animals and their relationships with humans and with other animals. At the same time, it is informative and could well be used in a teaching environment as it provides a lot of information relating to the tourist sights in Korea. It could also be a fun way of teaching youngsters about the North-South Korean divide. But most importantly: the story moves fast and is filled with excitement and fun.

The book was well-edited and the few typos and mistakes that slipped through, took nothing away from the enjoyment of the story. I found a few sentences that could read easier with the addition of commas or a rearrangement of the sentence construction.
This book makes a valuable contribution to children’s fiction and therefore I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

I highly recommend this book for children with a sense of adventure and a love of animals, but any adult or teacher wishing to educate children while reading an enjoyable story could certainly put this book to good use.
