[Following is a volunteer review of "Fish Wielder" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a hilariously epic fantasy novel. It is set in the magical world of Grome, where you will find elves, gnomes, sorcerers, scary monsters, and many other creatures. Readers will embark on a journey full of adventure with this novel.
The novel follows the journey of Thoral Mighty Fist, a hygiene-freak warrior who has striking violet eyes and golden hair. Thoral is the strongest and the fiercest fighter in the entire Grome. No one is aware of his mysterious past. He fights monsters and seeks adventure along with Warlordhorse, a loyal stallion, and Brad, a talking koi fish who can not swim. Unlike his intelligent companions, Thoral is impulsive and rash. Whenever Thoral is not on a quest, he spends his time drinking and brooding. This time Thoral comes across Bad Religion, who are seeking the Great Pudding of Power for their evil leader, the Heartless One, so that they can conquer the land of Grome. Thoral has sworn to find and defeat Bad Religion and the Heartless One to save the people of Grome.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. Although the story had a slow start, it soon picked the pace, and I got engrossed in this mystical world. I adored the bond of friendship, trust, and companionship between Thoral and Brad. This novel is a parody of the fantasy genre. I like how the author pointed out every cliche and obvious moment himself before the reader could even notice them.
Jim has done a brilliant job with character development and execution of the plot. I enjoyed the jaw-dropping twists and turns in the story. I commend the author for adding humor, even during the gory fighting scenes and solemn situations. One such situation is when Thoral accidentally spanked the evil sorcerer on his buttocks during the fight. Even during a kiss, Thoral was more concerned that he hadn’t checked the girl’s hair for lice. The plot was unique and gripping, despite the absurdity of the events. Also, the dialogues are very well written. Overall, this novel is packed with adventure, romance, and comedy. I will be eagerly waiting for its sequel because the book ends on a cliffhanger.
The novel is exceptionally well edited, as I did not come across any errors. This book is a page-turner, and it had me smiling throughout. There is nothing I dislike about this book. I am pleased to award Fish Wielder 4 out of 4 stars. I would heartily recommend this book to readers who enjoy epic fantasy along with a blend of humor. Also, lovers of stories filled with action and adventure will find this novel interesting. Although the novel contains several graphic scenes, the comical tone and silliness lighten the impact.
