When a unique energy drink named Lifio is pulled off from the American market by the FDA, it results in an absolute chaos. The drink that showed nothing but positive effects upon its consumption had to have a dark side to it. At least, that’s what the FDA scientist Carrie, believed. The owners of the drink company, consumed by greed, did their best to bring Lifio back into the market. However, the scientist who invented the formula couldn’t care less about the situation. The apparent effects of the drink on humans and society are visible much later, through the eyes of the story’s multiple protagonists. Do the positives still outweigh the negatives? Or is humankind on a ride for an impending doom?

If science fiction with a mix of politics and corruption is your thing, then Growth by Jon Pulli is for you. The story is set in a modern society very similar to ours, where the drink Lifio slowly takes over the world. The author does a wonderful job portraying the effects of the product and develops the narrative through multiple perspectives – members of the FDA, Melanie, Sebastian and Carrie under the guidance of President Williamson; owners of the Lifio drink company Helen and Alex along with its inventor Stefán and Michael, a young software developer building his career at the heart of a city center.

The best thing about the book is the author’s eye for detail and transitions. As the reader progresses through the story, they are acquainted with the ways of running a company, its economics, politics, etc. As well as the government processes of dealing with the masses complemented with personal gain and greed for power. A few science theories and facts are also in the mix explaining the working of Lifio in the human body. All this information might seem overbearing but is smoothly executed. I would say the main drivers of the story are the various real world situations that the characters have to go through in their field of work or personal lives. These aspects are what make the story more relatable.

Overall this book was a great experience. I personally did not find any information boring or unnecessary since it all comes together in the end. The book was well edited except a few grammatical errors which however, did not deter my reading. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The main reason is the concept of genetic mutation through a drink which is new for me and the other being the understanding one gains of people from different walks of life, be it good or bad.

This book is for anyone interested in sci-fi or dystopian novels in general. Don’t let the details make you hesitate because it is worth it. I recommend this book to an adult audience due to a bit of sexual content and graphic violence in a few chapters.
