The Queen of Xana by Peter Pilcher is an inventive fairytale for grown-ups. First, we meet little princess Agatha, who at her birth, is blessed by her fairy godmother with two gifts; wisdom and compassion. We go along with her on her daily rounds to the village. There she captures the hearts of the people. She identifies with them and tries to help in any way she can. Wealth and stature do not interest her. Agatha soon learns from queen Julia; everything there is to know about becoming a queen. She attends council meetings, where she soon learns that wealthy people don't care about the well-being of the townspeople. It troubles this young girl and makes her worried about their well-being. Agatha grows up still her heart yearns to help the unfortunate. Then tragedy strikes. She and all of Xana faces the evil darkness the Magi brings with him. She must choose wisely or forever be doomed. Becoming the person Agatha was born to be, she embraces the challenges and becomes Queen of Xana. She rules with dignity, compassion, and fairness. Although Agatha is beautiful and kind to a fault, she is strict but fair. She not only lays down the law she envisioned, but she also helps those who still try to break it. Agatha helps them back on their feet, but only if they repent and change their ways. Queen Agatha is loved through all of Xana. This queen is fearless and changes the old rules, to better suit the needs of her people. She invites children to sit in on council meetings where she listens to their advice. But not everyone is keen on this queen with the world at her feet. Jealousy prevails. War looms.

Fred Pilcher wrote a beautiful story set in mystical times. The words flowed well it made you feel at home. Getting to know Agatha was a treat. Her tenacity for being fair and doing the right thing will open the eyes of the reader. What this queen accomplished in her lifetime is a true miracle. It just goes to show that anything is possible. Agatha is a strong queen and managed to save her beloved Xanan and rule for seventy years.

What I like most about The Queen of Xana; are the life lessons the queen teaches the reader throughout the story. In a world like ours, where it's difficult to be courageous or simply just fair. Agatha shows the reader in the end that wisdom and compassion are the two most valuable things to have. I also enjoyed the historical explanations given by the author throughout the book.

The author manages to create a fairy tale with in-depth characters. The layout of the newly established government and everything it entails was well executed. Evil rears its ugly head a couple of times with no end in sight. The bad times created by the Magi, thought by the people to last forever ends dramatically, and then also the jealous brother kept me intrigued.

The Queen of Xana is an exceptionally well-edited book. I encountered no errors. There was nothing about this book that I disliked. I would like to rate the book four out of four stars. Readers that enjoy fantasy and romance will love this book. There is little profanity, but the sexual content makes this one for a more mature audience.
