[Following is a volunteer review of "Don't Mind Me, I'm Just Having a Bad Life" by Lewis Kempfer.]
Lewis Kempfer was dealt a shoddy hand from the beginning. From a young age, he experienced a myriad of abuse from pretty much every male that he encountered. His struggle with self-hatred and low self-esteem emerged and practically set him up for failure. Desperate to find happiness, Kempfer embarks on a long and disastrous journey searching for love and acceptance. Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life is the true-life story of one unfortunate man just trying to make it.
For me, this memoir had several positive aspects. This book pulled me in with just the title alone. I chose it because the title caught me off guard and made me laugh. I could tell that I was going to like this book and the author from the very beginning. Coincidentally, I found myself connecting with the author emotionally and mentally. I could relate to his feelings and admired how raw and honest he was. It was refreshing and made me feel like I wasn’t alone. Mental illness can make you feel extremely lonely at times, so I appreciated his openness. Another thing I liked was the dark humor. I feel like that made him so much more relatable and real.
The only negative aspect that I can really think of is the ending. I was kind of sensing a buildup in the story, and then it seemed like suddenly it was over. It was a bit anticlimactic and gave off a feeling of being rushed, but the overall message was good.
The memoir was full of detail and well-written. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and it’s probably one of the best books I’ve ever read. It just really struck a chord in me for some reason. I never thought I would be reading a memoir, because reading about someone else’s life has never sounded interesting to me. But I gave it a chance and I’m glad that I did. I will probably be more open to reading other memoirs now. I would be interested to read more of Kempfer’s work and I’m hoping that he has some more books out there. Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life gets an easy rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
I can think of a few different types of people whom I would recommend this book to. I think people that like dark humor and realness would enjoy reading this. I also think that people who like reading memoirs or watching documentaries would be interested.
