Review of Mrs. White’s SUB SNIPS
Life as a substitute teacher is tough. They teach, but they don’t reap the benefits of being a teacher. They are summoned at ungodly hours to sub for someone who has left no lesson plans for them. They are asked to do a thousand things, but they receive pretty much nothing in return. They are expected to work just as hard, if not harder, as a regular teacher, but they are not considered one of them. They save the day a lot of times, but they rarely receive their due.
Mrs. White’s SUB SNIPS by Laura Moss White tells the stories of these heroes without capes. Having spent fifteen years as a substitute teacher, White is familiar with all kinds of things that subs have to deal with. Her intimate knowledge of the profession is clear in the way she tackles the stories. The entire book is made up of boxes which contain colorless cartoons. Minimal and efficient dialogue is used to describe a situation. The rest falls on the illustration, which is clever and effective in expressing various emotions that subs go through.
Mrs. White’s SUB SNIPS has been one of the easiest reads of my life. Its every page is entertaining as well as eye-opening. Every box houses a story of its own, and you can either go through the book serially or open any page randomly. In any case, you are sure to have a good time. Apart from reading, it can also be used as a coloring book, which allows the reader a chance to participate in the stories in a new manner.
In a lot of ways, reading Mrs. White's SUB SNIPS felt like White has created a comic book for the unsung heroes like herself. The author makes sure that the reader not only enjoys the book but also takes away some very important lessons from it. The overworking, the sexism, the alienation, the harassment, and the pressure on substitute teachers is pretty evident through the pictures. You can laugh at them while reading the book, but you also develop more respect for what they do. I would advise everyone to go for this book. Students, especially, should read it to understand the importance of substitute teachers and the responsibility to treat them right.
My rating for Mrs. White’s SUB SNIPS is 4 out of 4 stars. I read it in one go, and was so engrossed in it that I was shocked when I found that it was finished. The illustrations and the writing do a brilliant job of bringing every scene, every classroom to life. You can feel the exhaustion of the person who receives a call in the middle of the night and then tries to address a class that is full of children who are no less than devils. I enjoyed every part of it. The only flaw in the book is that it’s too short! It is impeccably edited, and it has nothing but a good time in store for its audience.
