Randy the Irresistible by S.M. Goodier is a novel about a young man named Randy Love. The story takes place in England giving a narration of Randy’s life from the time he returns from USA, and takes us on a journey of his life as a young adult. He’s a young English man whom the ladies can’t resist, determined to succeed, and never afraid to tell a lie if the truth doesn’t seem to work out for him. After returning from the USA, Randy is on a mission to find a job and when the opportunity arises, decides to move to London. He quickly finds out that living in London is not as luxurious as it seems, even with a new hot girlfriend, and when he finds himself in a bit of pickle, Randy finds himself leaning on the one person he would’ve betted all his coins to stay without.

I really liked this book and enjoyed it. One of my favourite things about the book was the humour. The humour kept the story going strong. I also loved how natural the humour was, it was as the result of character formation, rather than forced. My second favourite thing was the character development of the main protagonist. Even though I can hardly relate to Randy, he was shown and written in such a way that I quickly fell in love with him and wanted to see how his journey panned out. I love how the author didn’t turn it into a “rebel turns good” story, but just showcased the interesting young adult life of Randy. The story goes in many directions and is unpredictable, but the characters are what ground the story and bring it to life.

My only dislike, which is a bit of a petty one, was that there were few instances of abrupt change in POV (point of view). This disrupted the flow of the story, primarily being narrated by Randy, when another would suddenly narrate or the story be told from their perspective. However, there were only a few instances of this and it is only a slight dislike.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. The book was quite enjoyable, with good humour and good characters, hence I gave it a three. I couldn’t give it a 4 however because although this was not something I disliked; the book was not the most eventful. There were slow moments and up until maybe the first half, no clear indication of where anything was really going. In addition, the book had a few errors, but was still edited exceptionally.

This book could appeal to almost anyone above the age of thirteen. There is a glossary at the end of the book for non-British readers to understand the British slang and terminology used. Although the novel doesn’t really target a specific audience, it may be most enjoyed by young adults. There is a line where Randy makes a quip about a religious character, this might offend any religious reader but considering Randy makes quips and quirky jokes at everyone, the book is suited for all religions.

In conclusion Randy the Irresistible by S.M. Goodier is a fun novel that could appeal to almost anyone. I gave it a rating of 3, and I highly recommend it.
