The Trafficking Murders by Brian O’Hare is a suspenseful thriller based around human trafficking syndicates in Northern Ireland.

When Sheehan, the head of the Serious Crimes Unit, and his team are tasked to investigate the murder of a beautiful young Chinese girl that was dumped in a seemingly random garden of an upmarket residence, they slowly discover that there appears to be much more involved in the case than they initially thought. There is a clever killer on the loose and it may take all their time and resources to find the killer and shut down a violent human-trafficking operation. As they delve deeper into the case, it seems to lead them into two different directions…

What I loved most about this book was the perspective: Not only do you see the investigative side of the story, but you also gain insight into the trafficked victims’ emotional and physical toll. O’Hare did an excellent job of taking the reader from start to finish, all whilst concealing the identity of the villain until the end of the book. The investigation was extremely detailed, giving it authenticity. I also felt anxious for the victims and understood why they fell prey to these atrocious crimes against humanity.

The story hooked me from page 1. As the plot unfolded, I found myself invested in the victims’ well-being. I can truly say that there was nothing I disliked about the writing style or plot. The flow was good and there were zero errors to disrupt my reading, leading me to believe that this book underwent a round of professional editing.

There are some triggers worth mentioning to sensitive readers that include violence, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. There is also use of some minor profanity. Given the above mentioned, I would not recommend this book to children.

Mature young adults and adults that would like to learn more about what goes into these operations should definitely pick up a copy of this book. It raises awareness that these criminals can manipulate anyone. Not only do most of these operations physically abuse their victims but there is also a severe psychological influence forced upon them. Most of the time the victims are also groomed beforehand or even force-fed drugs.

I was thoroughly impressed by this story and I look forward to reading more work by this author. This book deserves nothing less than a perfect 4 out of 4 stars.
