[Following is a volunteer review of "The Cartel Crusher" by Dan E. Hendrickson.]
The Cartel Crusher by Dan E. Hendrickson is a riveting work of fiction. It accurately portrays gangs in Mexico and shows the types of underground activities that allow evil men to get rich.
Marnia, the main character, experienced a traumatic event when she was 16 years old. She was on a cruise ship to celebrate her 16th birthday when a Mexican gang attacked. Instead of holding them up for ransom, the girls were raped and killed. Marnia was rescued before she was attacked, but this event sparked a deep hatred and a desire for justice. Instead of following in her father’s footsteps and becoming politically involved, she decided to join the military. She excelled and quickly moved up in rank. From there, she began apprehending gangs and cartels in Mexico. The arrests quickly put her in the spotlight and promoted her to more dangerous missions. One of her most crucial missions involved her with the top 5 richest cartel owners. This put her in a lot of danger, but she needed to stop the gun smuggling and corruption. She struggled to keep herself safe and make progress at the same time. Eventually, she connected events and realized that no deaths were ever an accident or a coincidence.
There were many things about the novel that I liked. For example, it had many plot twists that kept me engaged. Also, there were a lot of betrayals: and that just served to show how power is a precarious balance. A lot of the cartel owners turned quickly, and that was a major failing on their part. I loved having access to Marnia’s thoughts: it helped me see her develop as a character throughout the novel. It also helped me fully understand what was going on and even predict what would happen next. At the beginning of each chapter, there was a bold heading. It stated what character’s perspective it was and where they were. This feature helped me keep track of what was going on better. The multiple character perspectives also helped keep me interested in the novel.
There wasn’t anything about the book that I didn’t like. Overall, I thought it was a really good novel with a unique plotline. The book was really well edited, with no grammatical errors.
Due to the reasons above, I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book would be excellent for someone who loves mysteries and a thrilling plot. However, there are some pretty graphic descriptions of fights and rape. Therefore, parents should use their discretion if they allow their teenagers to read this book.
