[Following is a volunteer review of "Three loves and other stories" by Lata Gullapalli.]
Three loves and other stories is a collection of 8 short stories. 8 beautiful stories that are a reminder of how life is different for all of us, some find love in arranged marriages and see ice cream as more than just a dessert but so much more in their relationship, while others would do anything to escape the reality of having a partner chosen for them. We also read about how a mother is trying to help her children deal with bullying at school. Lata Gullapalli also writes about abuse and how Sia (Three loves) chooses herself and leaves an abusive relationship. Some characters in the stories find themselves having to choose between their careers and love. Lata also tells a story about how a man so in love with his job finally falls in love with a lady who was tasked with spending time with him for research purposes only. I found all the stories to be very relatable.
From the very first story I appreciated how Lata reminds women to take back their power and move from toxic relationships, be it with family or a lover, she continues to empower women in the other stories by portraying other female characters as career and family women. She also allows us to question some old age traditions that seem to oppress us women. Like arranged marriages and the expectation to always put the family before one's dreams.
The time shift between some the events in the stories are a little confusing. In the story Magic again, I found it difficult understanding if the events where current or were memories shared. the spelling errors also made it difficult to read swiftly. The metaphors used in the first story Three loves are a little too much and so a lot can easily get lost in translation.
I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars this is because of the spelling errors and the time shifts I mention above. I will not score the book any less because I found the stories very relatable.
I would recommend the book to men who are trying to understand and love women better. I believe it would shed light on the many sacrifices women make for love and therefore deserve to be loved softly. women would also appreciate the book because of how they are portrayed.
