Demon Freaks is a book in the horror-comedy genre, written by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison. The story is fast-paced with a lot of action and a touch of humor.

Bing and Ron Slaughter are identical twins who try their best to look nothing alike. Even their behavior sets them apart as Bing takes life more seriously, planning for his future, whereas Ron is a person who goes more with the flow. They are high school students and have a band with their friends Meat and Kaitlyn. After one school day, despite Bing's persuasion for them to study for their SATs, they decide to gather in Meat's family's cabin, where they would do band practice. Surprisingly, their plans change along with a mysterious storm that happens to be a catalyst for multiple dangerous situations for the night, where people with demonic intentions play their part.

There was some comedy, and horror in scenes on the morbid side included, but the story wasn't heavily laden with neither. I wouldn't describe the story really comedic because it couldn't exactly trigger any laughter in me, nor did I find it too humorous at any point. So, nothing was too serious nor frightening.

Of all the characters, I liked most the twins, Bing and Ron, who were two of the leading ones. Though the friends, Meat and Kaitlyn, complemented the two, personally, I didn't find them to have as intriguing personas. The main characters were described pretty well, and it was nice that there were contradicting personalities as it made the overall image more interesting. Additionally, there were shared a few philosophical thoughts along the way, and even though the topic was touched only on a surface level, it added depth to an extent, too. On the other hand, as there were also many side characters and creatures together with constantly changing scenes, everything was maybe a bit too hectic.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The story was consistently all right with a lot going on and proceeded at a fast pace without being out of order. The text also seemed to be professionally edited as I didn't come upon mistakes or errors of any kind. In conclusion, Demon Freaks was a rather entertaining and worthwhile book to read even if it wasn't anything mind-blowing to me. I would recommend it to people who like stories that hold your attention throughout without a lull in the action.
