Toni the Superhero is a short children’s book written by R.D. Base. With illustrations by Debbie Hefke matching words with actions, this book serves an educational purpose and is intended to support children in their reading development journey.

Toni is a little boy who is also a superhero. He has amazing powers, but just like any other child, he has things he likes too. In his downtime, he does these and other everyday activities. These include reading, drawing, playing, rescuing animals, swimming, and much more. All these activities demonstrate the daily life of an average child.

Base discloses that this book does not have a storyline. It instead acts as an introductory book, kicking off a series of books that will further explore Toni’s life. Its target audience, as stated by Base, are those beginning to read, between the ages of 0 and 4 years.

I liked the simplicity of the book, especially considering its aim. There are basic sentences used, uncluttered by difficult wording. The meshing of the verbs with the pictures creates a visual medium for children to better grasp the concepts used. The illustrations are bright and eye-catching, which I think will go a long way in helping to grab and keep the attention of even those children who are easily distracted. The complete lack of mistakes, grammatical or otherwise, in these sentences led me to assume that this book has been professionally edited.

I rate this book four out of four stars. This is as Toni the Superhero accomplishes what it sets out to: provide an introduction. It has beautifully drawn images with no errors or formatting issues present. This book can be used by early educators as part of their curricula. Parents who wish to start on their child’s or children’s education might also deem the content in this book suitable. Those looking for a plot to entertain their children should perhaps look elsewhere.
