[Following is a volunteer review of "Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks" by Morton E Tavel, MD.]
Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is a handbook to healthy living. It is written by Morton E Tavel who among many things was a physician specialist in internal medicine, and cardiovascular diseases including, a Clinical Professor at Indiana University school of medicine. Using the vast amount of knowledge he has, the author through this book guides the reader on how to live a healthy life by, giving them useful health tips, telling them about common myths which mislead them, and also exposing the tricks used by health companies to scam their unsuspecting customers. In this book he writes 62 chapters on a variety of topics such as, how to lose weight, foods to avoid, vaccinations, exercising, probiotics, and surprisingly, polygraph tests. The author uses this book to give information and facts about these topics and many more so that the reader makes informed decisions regarding their health and their money. In this book, the author is not afraid to call out and mention brands that are misleading the public in a bid to make money through advertisements. He helps the reader to be more analytical and alert while making decisions and purchases regarding their health.
What I liked about this book is its flexibility. The reader only has to pick their topic of interest, hence it's not required to read the entire book from start to finish for it to serve its purpose well. One can also easily refer back to it for quick answers on any given topic of interest. Moreso the author uses research and his expertise to educate the reader on the different topics, hence making one's reading experience very rich and informative. Also, I liked the fact that the author is not afraid to mention particular brands by name and how they are misleading the public, including giving credit where it is due. This shows that he has got confidence in what he is saying. After reading this book, the reader feels like a heavyweight is lifted off their shoulders because the author tackles so many common myths that we are constantly taunted with, which are untrue. I also liked that the author used simple English which a layperson would clearly understand without having to pull out the dictionaries.
What I disliked about the book is that the author used a lot of research from other sources to back his claims, but there was little from his own experience. As an experienced physician and teacher, I would have loved to know what his personal experience was regarding those claims. Secondly, the author is quick to discredit some practices such as alternative treatment, without giving substantive evidence.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 because it successfully fulfilled its purpose and was also very well edited except for a few paragraphing errors.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in living a healthy life because the author covers most if not all topics of interest. Moreso it could also suit a young audience because the author uses simple language that can be understood by all, and it would be good for them not to drag these myths into their adulthood.
