[Following is a volunteer review of "Ironing" by Navajo.]
Navajo in his book Ironing, talks about the problems and the struggles that normal everyday people have to deal with on a daily basis. The book follows a bunch of unrelated stories, which means that there is not a main protagonist the way the reader would expect it to be. But generally, the book follows the story of three college girls Ginie,Royanda and Emma, who want to go to a greyhound racing centre in East London. Emma, despite her friends warnings, is determined to pet the racing dogs. What happens next is explained in the book,so read it to find out!
I strongly believe that the book's strongest advantage is it's relatability. Themes as parenting , friendship , dating and lifestyle in generall are the pillars of the story. Everyone can relate to the blind dating disappointments that Emma seems to deal with all the time. The dialogues are some times hilarious and some time serious, like normal , everyday dialogs that you can hear while you drink a coffee in a coffee shop or while you are waiting for the bus in the station.
The author's writing style is very straigh forward , without a lot of portrayals , which is suitable for the kind of story the book tells. Although , sometimes the writer uses vulgar language , it doesn't disturb the reader as it is something very usual in the everyday conversations.
However, a lot of the side stories of the book end very sharply, which leads to characters appearing and dissappearing all the time, leaving me with questions that never got answers. Moreover, the changes between the stories and the characters are tangled and left me really comfused about the continuity of the story.
To sum up, I'm rating Ironing 2 out of 4 stars. I only put 2 stars because, even though the book had potential, the problems that I have already mentioned really destroyed the experience for me. On the other hand, I can't rate the book lower because of the positive points that I have already mentioned. Also , I feel obliged to warn the readers of the plethora of profanities that the book has, so don't read it if you are easily offended. Otherwise, the lovers of fictionalized life stories might find the book worth reading.
