[Following is a volunteer review of "Breakers" by Barry Litherland.]
Breakers by Barry Littherland, is a crime thriller with a paranormal sideline story that blends together for the perfect heart stopping read.
Billy McArdle, local fisherman with a history in petty crime, has got himself mixed up with a Glasgow drug gang. On a stormy night he is collecting illegal lobster pots when his shipmate Denny is dragged from the deck by an unseen monster and disappears to a watery grave. With Billy giving his tale of what happened to disbelieving Detective Inspector, Jack Munro, he ends up in a prison cell, a storm raging outside. Parked just off shore is a yacht containing not only drugs but a cargo of immigrants that Billy was due to meet to offload. With Billy now indisposed, it's crew needs to get rid of it's cargo and quick.
A few hours later a young boy emerges from the sea, climbing the cliffs to a croft, guided by an unseen hand and voice. Soon after a menacing gang assassin arrives in the small harbor town, orders given to track down and kill those responsible for the failed drug pick up. Mix in with this a 200 year old skeleton and watching all this from above the town, on a cliff edge, is a young woman with revenge on her mind because at the heart of this thriller is a tale of 200 year old retribution.
One of the things I enjoyed was that chapters are told from different characters perspectives which in some books can make a story feel disjointed and confusing but in Breakers this isn't the case as the leap between characters perspectives keeps the story flowing each time.
My only negative would be the number of characters, especially the crime gang members, can be confusing to keep track of.
I have given Breakers 4 out of 4 stars as it is instantly gripping and keeps the reader guessing to the end. The opening couple of chapters really draw the reader quickly into the story. The characters are realistic and likable and the story builds slowly but without the reader losing interest.
I enjoyed the mix of crime and ghost story and felt this added an extra touch to the thriller genre and gave a touch of originality.
I would recommend this book to all lovers of both crime thrillers and the paranormal. As a warning there are themes of violence, assaults' and murder. There is some profanity but it is not frequent.
