Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a comedy horror story about twins Ron and Bing. It starts when their evil teacher bullies them, and they do not want to work at McDonald’s for the rest of their life like their parents. The twin decided to study SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and practice with their bandmates, Meat and Kaitlyn. However, the study and rehearsal turn into something they have never imagined. They are thrown into a dangerous journey involving a supernatural world and evil magic.

There are a lot of things that I liked about this book. First is the author’s humor. I particularly enjoy even the slightest humor in the story. Second, I loved the characterization, especially in Meat. He is also hilarious. I liked the part when things got messed up when he was around, for instance, in the scene where he talks to a dagger which is possed by a human soul. He was trying so hard to speak with the person, not knowing that the possed person spoke loudly in his head. Furthermore, I love how everything is carefully planned. Usually, I found comedy horror to be somewhat more like a comedy than a horror, but this story is balanced and makes good instead of dry humor.

The story is told in the third person point of view, but it jumps around to follow different characters at different times. To be honest, it disturbed me a little bit, especially when I was too focused on the plot. I got confused when suddenly the narrator changed. However, I have to admit that the author is really smart in arranging the changes. Even though it still confused me, I found it way better than the other stories with a jumping narrator.

As a result, I give this book a four out of four stars rating. I was genuinely impressed by the book. I also appreciate the author’s effort in doing research for this book. I found everything necessary and on point. Aside from reading the story, I want this story to be adapted into a movie. It would be great to see the chaos performed by actors. Furthermore, it is well-written and appears to have been professionally edited since I didn’t find any grammatical or punctuation errors.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories with humor and horror. However, young readers or readers who are easily offended by profanity may be needed to think twice before reading this book.
