Review of Final Act
Take the question, "What would you do if you knew you only had a few days to live?" and flip the script. Now, what would others do if they knew you had a few days to live? Van Fleisher explores this in Final Act, the second book of this series.
This is all possible thanks to a new and advanced fitness watch called the VT2, and the purpose of it is to allow its wearers the opportunity to sort out their affairs before their death dates arrive. Vijay Patel, the creator of VT2, must deal with an unexpected consequence of his invention. Wearers of the watch who have received their final notices, who also happen to be gun owners, have been linked to an increase in violent and fatal attacks. As this was not the intended use of the watch, Vijay begins working with the FBI to monitor and hopefully prevent future incidents. His main focus is to find correlations between the shooters and their physiological states leading up to the events and utilize those to predict who is likely to commit an act of violence. This new feature would allow law enforcement to intercept and stop attacks. However, the situation worsens when a group of people decides to use those who have received their final notices to carry out assassinations and this throws both Vijay and the authorities for a loop.
Final Act is an amazing combination of mystery and thriller. It keeps you enthralled and on your toes. Each character is diverse and the representation is immaculate. There is a multitude of representations from age, gender, sexual orientation, and race. It deals with very real situations and circumstances that make the reader question their values and provoke one to think deeper on topics such as death, gun control, justice, revenge and who earns the right to it, etc. Although this is the follow-up to the Final Notice, you can read it as a standalone and not feel lost. The book does a good job of giving the reader all the necessary information. I have not read the first book but found the second book easy to understand and enjoy.
What I enjoyed the most was how each character and their story is thoroughly explored and how it flows naturally. As a reader, you will easily connect with the characters and either like them or dislike them, and reasonably so. The depiction of LGBTQ+ relationships was thoughtfully done and felt realistic and genuine. I enjoyed every aspect of the book and highly recommend it to readers who enjoy mystery and thriller novels, and those who enjoy science themes will enjoy this book.
Therefore I give it a 3 out of 4.
