Review of Cynthia and Dan
Cynthia and Dan: Cyber Wars by Dorothy May Mercer is a romantic suspense story. There are three main characters in this story: Cynthia, Dan, and Sky. Cynthia is a highly skilled and intelligent bodyguard to Senator McBride, and she takes her role as his protector very seriously. Cynthia teams up with her brother Garth to create a team that will begin to take down, sabotage, and interfere with the terrorists who try to recruit new members and plan attacks online using social media. Dan is Cynthia's boyfriend, and he is a police officer who works long and odd hours. He is very antisocial, makes a low income, and has a short temper. Cynthia begins to doubt her relationship with Dan starting to feel as if they are more friends than dating. They do not often go out, and he rarely visits her, mostly texting or phoning each other, and Dan has made no move to show a real commitment to Cynthia. Finally, Cynthia meets Sky, a mysterious man, and she has a one-night love affair with him, leading to an unexpected relationship. Cynthia begins to worry about Sky and why he has such a strong interest in her. Unable to find any information on this mysterious man, she believes he might be a spy that is using her to get to the Senator. So, she changes her email and phone number to avoid contact with him. Sky begins to write to her to respect her wishes of no personal contact, but it becomes difficult for him as he believes he has fallen in love with Cynthia.
I loved reading this novel by Dorothy May Mercer more than some of her other books, because it had an interesting love story, and the information on the cyber wars was so well written and gave fascinating details. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the cyber nerds and how they would skillfully intercept the terrorists using social media. My favorite character in the story was not one of the main characters, but instead, it was Tim, one of the cyber nerds. Tim is an adorable but confident character that you just cannot help falling in love with. Garth was the other cyber nerd I really liked, because he is so intelligent, and his character brought a lot of humor to the story. Without Garth, I doubt there would be much to laugh at.
Cynthia's character annoyed me a little, because she is a bodyguard to the Senator, yet she is never around him to protect him. She is not as intelligent as she should be for a woman who makes decisions on the Senator's safety or the country in general. She seems to be lacking logic or common sense in the story when it comes to her personal life, and even on a few occasions in her professional life. It almost came across as self-sabotage at times, or she was just pretending to be ignorant. For example, in the 21st century, everyone knows how to ensure you do not fall pregnant, but she lacks the knowledge on all the drugs available or how to deal with an accidental pregnancy. She allowed Sky to talk to her like she was an uneducated child who needed to be taught about safe sex and precautions because somehow, this man has more knowledge about unwanted pregnancies and all the drugs available to ensure you do not get pregnant than she did.
I am giving this book a 3 out of 4 stars rating because I enjoyed reading the story and found a lot of it to be quite fascinating, but I will deduct one star because I did not like the main characters very much and found myself preferring the supporting characters in this story.
I would recommend anyone who enjoys a love story or cyber warfare to read this book. There is a bit of sexual content in the story, but nothing too intense, and there is hardly any profanity. However, I believe this book would be best suited for young adult readers.
