The greatest gift of life is friendship. Having a friend whom you can tell your weaknesses, without him or her judging you, is a great blessing that we should never take for granted. We love it when we have a friend that brings out the best in us. Backcomb and Tatoo by Shea R Embry is a book that covers the themes of friendship, secrets and most importantly, love.

This book is about four women, who meet under different circumstances, but ends up being best friends. Aunt Mary Opal is suffering from a terminal illness, that is, cancer, and she wants to spend her last days around young and energetic people, just having fun. She keeps her illness a secret but not for a very long time because her young friends soon gets to find out about it. Aunt Mary Opal refers to Rachael as the sweet one, Nicole as the intelligent one and Jesi, the impatient one. In the course of their friendship, Rachael learns to look out for herself before others, while Nicole and Jesi learns learns about the importance of trust. The four women have one say that always unites them, "have fun, it's the best thing to have." After she finds out that she has cancer again, Aunt Mary Opal plans on how to end her life with dignity, because she doesn't want to go through the pain that she had once gone to. Will she succeed? Will her friends be able to change her mind about the decision?

This book contains two hundred and ninety-four pages. It is divided into forty-one chapters. There are some acknowledgments at the end of the book, and , we are told a bit about the author. The author used both the present and past tense while writing the book. The most dominant theme in this book is the theme of friendship.

There are several things I liked about the book, but I'll just mention a few. First of all, the author used very simple and understandable vocabulary, making it easy to understand the book. I liked how the author created suspense as I anticipated knowing what would happen next, this kept me glued to the book. I also liked how the book stirred up a mixture of emotions inside me, as one time, I would find myself crying emotionally, and the next minute, I would be laughing uncontrollably.

There is nothing I disliked about the book, for it only had life changing lessons. The book was well edited as I found no grammatical errors, and I, therefore, rate the book four out of four stars , and recommend the book to an audience that loves adventure with friends and also an audience, who would like to know more about strengthening friendship bonds.
