Eggstravagant Easter Eggs by Maya Elston is a hobby guide of interesting and diverse techniques for transforming a normal egg into a piece of art. All the methods are based on traditional methods and aspects, and Elston adapts them and proposes modern methods and tools that can make the process easier for the new egg artists.

Before starting to dive into the book, I expected to find out more details about the cultural differences, why, and where certain models can be found. There is a nice and short summary to make a basic idea about this type of art. It would have been nice to go a bit more in-depth about the cultures that have used eggs as an art medium for a long time and highlight some interesting peculiarities. There are some random mentions of such things, like how in some places the painted eggs are hung on a small tree, but it would have been nice to mention where those places are and what connected or made them different.

At some point, it is mentioned that most of the projects in the book are not for children and that it would have been too subjective to rate each by difficulty. However, I think this could have been of help for those that recently started to show an interest in egg designs. Ordering them by how time-consuming a technique might be could be helpful.

I loved to see a whole chapter dedicated to describing the importance of choosing the correct type of egg for your project and how to do this. Nicely explained and full of tips that I found very helpful.

It is nice there is a chapter dedicated to the materials and tools needed before you start to put your crafty hands to work. While it was nice to have a chapter dedicated only to this, it would have made my experience as a reader and crafter even better if at the start of a new project I could find a summary of what is needed just for that technique. It can get quite frustrating (and messy, if you read while doing) to keep turning pages for what you need or guess while you're going through the technique’s chapter. However, I am delighted to say that the images used as a support for describing the decorating techniques are marvelous and easy to follow.

I give Eggstravagant Easter Eggs a rating of three out of four stars. I was happy to come across it and be reminded of my ethnic background and the easter holiday spent preparing with my grandmother the eggs to display on the festive table. It has made me look forward to the next family gathering where I can share some of the nice new things that I have learned (and made).

As it is, the audience that can enjoy this book is quite large. I am deducting a star for the page arrangement and missing a coherent chapter on the origin of the models. However, if you are not looking for a historic background and only want to practice the techniques that Maya Elston "eggcellently" explains, I would say this is a fine book for those looking to start a new hobby or amateur artists that would like to experiment a new art medium.
