In this collection of poems, Poems About Things That Mattered Most: Faith, Family, Country, written by Dr. Bob Dowell, you get to live the life of Dr. Dowell through his memoir. The poems within the collection follow events such as his wedding, the birth of grandchildren, birthdays, anniversaries, and more. Other poems read more as his thoughts and reflections of specific topics: tithing, America, the Bible, religion, Benjamin Franklin, and many others.

I would happily rate Poems About Things That Mattered Most: Faith, Family, Country 4 out of 4 stars. The poems were well written and well edited, flowing nicely. They could easily be read at a spoken word event and easily flow off the reader's tongue. I have no criticism of this work. It is good, honest, and sincere, the exact qualities one looks for in poetry.

My favorite part of this collection is how sincere the poems are. This book was published after Dr. Dowell found his old writings. He didn't write this to make a profit. It was his genuine and honest reflection of his life through time, and it shows. This led to a very personable feeling as if you knew Dr. Dowell.

I honestly have no criticisms of this book. It is honest and sincere. I am not usually a fan of poetry, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading the works of Dr. Dowell in Poems About Things That Mattered Most: Faith, Family, Country. This collection was so enjoyable that I believe it has even changed my opinions on poetry, as long as the other works are as well written as Dr. Dowell's.

This book is excellent for people who have experienced a lot of life, as they will find relations to Dr. Dowells life, and it will create a pleasant trip down memory lane. Even if one doesn't particularly enjoy poetry, they will likely enjoy reading this. The book strongly follows ties to the Christian God, so people of that religion would likely enjoy it most. This book is boldly American, meaning anyone who believes in the American dream will enjoy this poetry. This collection of poems would be good to read as a whole family, and while it occasionally says "hell," it is always in the context of Heaven and Hell, rather than profanity. As the title suggests, anyone who cares about their faith, family, and country is sure to enjoy this collection by Dr. Dowell.
