Review of Hemingway's Daughter
Hemingway’s Daughter is a superb work of Christine Whitehead. It is a combination of the life of the famous American novelist, Ernest Hemingway with a twist of fiction as she incorporated an imaginative daughter, Finley Hemingway. The storyline took place in mid-1940’s to 1980s where we can meet Finley as a 12-year-old daughter and walk through her lifetime of struggles and success.
The novel revolves around the different kind of love that evolves in the life of Finley. The first remarkable bond which is visible throughout the novel is the paternal bond between a father and a daughter. A bond that is filled with highs and lows; filled with love and misunderstandings. It shows a normal life of a family that deals with problems such as elicit relationships, breakups, and alcoholism. Despite the imperfections of Ernest as a father, Finley’s love as a daughter prevailed. Aside from the love of father and daughter, romantic love also manifested in Finley’s life. Whitehead presents the sweetness of first love and the calmness of last love. How Finley found both loves will keep a reader engaged on each page. Lastly, the love for one’s goal and career. Whitehead created an incredible plotline where Finley thrived her way to become a female lawyer in a place and time where woman’s strength and capabilities are not yet accepted by society.
Whitehead gives us a life-encouraging book with overflowing plots that could uplift different aspects of our lives. It shows that no matter how much you walked away you can always come home to your father. It shows that first love can give you heartbreaks you may think you will not recover from, but someday, no matter how long it may take, you will find a love that you would like to settle with. It shows how determination and courage will help you reach your goals regardless of the standard that the majority of society had set.
I could not provide negative feedback for this book. This is a unique combination of fiction and history. This is a book filled with life lessons and encouragement. The author had been very descriptive on the events and scenes which makes it easier for the reader to feel what the author is trying to make you feel. This is a well-edited book and I didn’t see any grammatical error in the entire novel.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, as this is a well-written book from the brilliant imagination of the author. Reading this book, made me do a quick research about Ernest Hemingway. I had been caught in a box wherein I could no longer tell if either Finley is real or Ernest is fiction. They fit perfectly in each other’s life that you won’t be able to tell that both of them never existed in each other’s life. This book is highly recommended for children who feel distant from their fathers. And to young individuals who are struggling in creating their spot in their chosen careers.
