Whether addiction is associated with alcohol, marijuana, opioids, or any other substance, it impacts millions of people negatively. Despite this, we still fail to understand addition quite well. We hold the belief that those who are addicts are responsible for their miserable lives and should be held accountable. Can we simply say addicts who got themselves hooked are to be blamed or punished for the wrong decision they took? Why Can't Johnny Just Quit? by Kyle Oh, MD is a non-fiction text that discusses how alcohol and drug addiction are not bad behaviors as the majority of people perceive them to be, but actually illnesses that can destroy the lives of men. Since addiction is a disease, we should help addicts rather than condemn them since their brains have been restructured to become dependent on drugs. Reading this book, we will not only gain a better understanding of addiction as a disease, but we will also learn how to aid individuals who suffer from it and prevent those from letting themselves get addicted in the first place.

The author's writing style fascinates me. Kyle isn't biased in his writing when trying to define what addition means. For him, those that fall victim to addiction shouldn't be blamed since it was just circumstances that made them fall into that situation. Even if they have free will, they are not responsible for getting hooked in the first place, and it is very difficult to get them out of it. The author believes that it is never too late to save them. All that is needed is to give them proper treatment. I also love the educative aspect of the book. For instance, I got to learn how individuals can react differently to taking hard substances, pain medication, or alcohol. Finally, I love the part where it lists out links and index, which not only makes the book look more professional but also helps readers who want to locate specific information that may be needed.

I cannot think of any negative aspects of the book except for the excessive repetition. The book was supposed to be a few pages long, but it became much longer because the author kept making the same point over and over again. For example, addition as a disease was mentioned repeatedly in several chapters.

The book has been meticulously edited and is free of errors. The fact that there is a lot of repetition doesn't take away from my appreciation of it; rather, it aids my understanding of the author's point of view. As a result, I'd rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

This book is for physicians, psychologists, or psychiatrists who want to learn more about addiction, how to cure it, and how to prevent people from falling victim to addiction in the first place. This book is also intended for those who want to know for certain if they are addicted to specific substances while consuming them.
