Review of Manifesto for a Cancer Patient
Manifesto for a Cancer Patient by Colleen Huber, NMD, discusses several points related to natural medicine and cancer patients. Huber, a naturopathic physician, encompasses how natural medicine is an efficient alternative for any cancer patients who are either newly diagnosed or concurrently under a specific treatment mode such as chemotherapy. Moreover, she also entails the efficacy of certain practices that numerous studies have shown in combatting cancer: engaging in exercise, lowering sugar intake, increasing vitamins C, A, D supplements, and introducing sodium bicarbonate and alkalinizing agents. Huber also discloses significant findings of the cause of cancer and how chemotherapy and radiation, when applied alone, usually lead to its severity. This book contains both a scientific basis and the author’s stance on the politics of the pharmaceuticals industry and ongoing dogmas surrounding alternative vs. conventional medicine.
Direct and determined to stay objective, this book is quite an interesting and informative one to me. I certainly enjoyed learning new concepts and being rectified at the same time. This book has made me question my understanding of cancer, natural medicine, the basic science behind exercise and supplements, the pharmaceutical industries, and the dissolution between conventional and alternative medicine. I have always had a crystallized opinion on cancer and standard medical practices and treatments but, the author's standpoint on natural remedies helped me gain a new perspective as someone who is currently a medical student. Overall, this book has motivated me to learn and critically study what seems generally accepted but may need improvement.
I would say that there are two elements that I found erroneous in this book: A handful of lengthy sentences and the tedious-looking tables of results discussed in chapters six to eight. Both somewhat disrupted the flow of thought within the paragraphs. At first, the wordy sentences seemed unclear unless one read them more than twice and carefully dissected them. The results in tables would have been more coherent if displayed as bar or line graphs because such modes show trends less confusingly. Other than that, the book has a fair amount of medical and scientific jargon evenly dispersed in every chapter.
With that in mind, I am giving this academic work a four out of four stars, not only because it is generally educational and engaging, but it is also friendly in terms of depth and vocabulary used throughout the book. It needs a bit of improvement but, I find it worth reading as it is now. I did not find enough errors to distract my reading course. Also, reading it has reminded me to be patient and open-mind regardless of whatever knowledge I may have already had in the past. Overall, it was a satisfying experience, and I am glad I picked it for my review session.
Manifesto for a Cancer Patient is a scholarly book that I recommend to anyone, especially those with a basic understanding of health science and medicine. It is a good, helpful source of information for students in college with STEM backgrounds, professionals working in the medical field, and for those who are willing to learn more about cancer and how natural medicine can help combat and cure it as either an alternative or complete treatment. As the title suggests, it is to educate anyone who may be suffering from such a debilitating disease and guide the people surrounding such an individual. It is a book meant to educate and serve the common good.
