Review of Hands Across The Sea
Hands Across The Sea by Brian Cook is a book that takes you on a journey through the lives of police officers in the Office of the Sheriff or as it is known the “Agency”. Throughout the book, the author introduces the reader to several characters, dipping into their lives and pulling apart their personalities. Although the author uses a lot of “cop talk” he makes sure that the reader always understands what is happening even if you are not familiar with the terminology of police officers. Throughout promotions, demotions, and scandals you get immersed into the love and life of police officers and their family’s that sometimes get forgotten and left behind. When Carrison Cottrell was elected as the 16th Sheriff of the Agency it was the rotten egg in the basket but through determination and hard work, he made it one of the best but due to a debilitating sickness he now needs to hand over his “baby” into someone else’s hands.
When Sheriff Cottrell is diagnosed with Creutzfelt-Jacob’s disease he realized that he would need to step down and select a new candidate that he would entrust to run his beloved Agency. After years of hard work and determination, he cannot allow someone that he has no confidence in to step in and make a mess of things. The question is, did he make the right choice when he backed Callaghan? Once Callaghan and his three wise men steps in they have some serious decisions to make regarding appointments and demotions. Commander Powell, Lieutenant Fitzpatrick, and Lieutenant Kendall are just a few of the officers in the Agency that will either rise or fall to the challenges of everyday dealings within the Agency. Throughout promotions, demotions, engagements, and affairs, Hands Across The Sea will never leave you bored.
This book is at the same time intriguing as well as enlightening, especially for people that have never had anything to do with the police force. It does give you glims into not only the police officers’ lives but also the lives of their families. What I appreciated about the book is that the author never played down the politics that goes on in a police station or any state agency and he never sugarcoat anything. The humor in the book is definitely a bonus and makes for a fantastic read. The book is very well edited even with all the “cop jargon” that is introduced in the book.
What I did not like about the book is that it does start a bit slow and you do tend to lose a little bit of interest but due to the way that the author writes you are intrigued enough to carry on through the slightly longer and seemingly unnecessary explanations. You do later in the book realize that it was all necessary to understand the more subtle undercurrents between the characters.
Due to the fact that the author captivates your imagination as well as your sense of humor I will definitely rate this book a 4 out of 4. If long stories are not really your thing, then I would not recommend this book. I would however recommend this book to a very wide range of readers that enjoys humor, a little bit of mystery, and a lot of insight into the love and life of police officers.
