The early life of Dr. Frank L Douglas started as a child who was born and raised in a very poor family that could only survive by obtaining help from friends and other members of the extended family. Frank decided to choose commitment and dedication so that he would probably lift himself above the dominant life of poverty prevalent in his family. However, Dr. Frank is presently a successful academist, lecturer, influencer, and a vital human resource for his community.

Where life seems unfair—not enough money, neither is there any source of training sponsorship—what lies in between his early life and his current life as to how he could reach a high standard of professional proficiency, which allowed him to overcome certain limits in his personal life? You would have to check it out from the book.

Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream is a memoir that presents the rugged experiences of Dr. Frank L Douglas as he single-handedly rose from a zero hierarchy of life to a zenith life hierarchy. Suicide attempts, educational discrimination, and racial discrimination mark him throughout his journey towards fulfilling his dreams.

The book is such a touching one, and as a lover of memoir, I cherished the overall idea of what the author presented. Apart from this, I found every single experience of the author, which contributed to his ups and downs, as vital and engaging to read about. It was a touching experience reading how the young Frank grew up in Guyana amidst poverty to achieve the seemingly impossible for his life. His mindset for commitment and faith in hard work helped him climb mountains; with this mindset, he took the Cambridge exam, which secured him admission into Queens College. After this, he went further to pursue a scholarship to study engineering at Lehigh University, and he succeeded. I felt sad for him at a point in the book, and I have also felt happy for him for overcoming his limitations destined for him in life by his background. For example, I was emotionally touched reading where he had to attempt suicide at a very young age. Also, I found it informative reading about how foreign black folks were treated in the US. This is depicted in the book where the author explained the University experience he had with his lecturers—downgrading his abilities while comparing him with his white-student colleagues.

There's nothing I didn't like about this book. The book has helped me to gain energy and hope for some concerns that seem complicated. As a lover of self-help books, this came in handy. The organization of the contents is functionally woven together, and the tone is clear. All these qualities make the book easy to comprehend. Also, I couldn't find grammar errors in the book, so it is exceptionally well edited. Therefore, I'll rate Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream by Dr. Frank L Douglas with a rating of 4 out of 4 stars

To the lovers of memoirs and self-help books, I recommend this book. Also, I will recommend the book to teachers and individuals who work as youth counselors; they can add the author's life summary to their experiential knowledge.
