[Following is a volunteer review of "Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)" by Barry Litherland.]
Waves Break (On Unknown Shores) is a crime novel written by Barry Litherland. It explores the lives of childhood friends, and how events from their childhood caused a ripple effect that still haunts them as adults. Phil, Wayne, Tina, and Stevie are best friends, tormented every day by Tyrone, Wayne’s abusive older brother. Something unimaginable happened when they were only children, scarring each of them for the rest of their lives. Years later, despite their differences, Phil and Wayne remain best friends, and Wayne and Tina are romantically involved. A break-in occurs at Tina’s father’s house, and he is beaten savagely after he discovers the burglar in his home. A secret document seems to have been taken from his safe during the event, and Wayne, because of his turbulent history and his proximity to the victim, is accused of the crime. Phil works as a journalist for the local newspaper and is intent on proving his friend’s innocence, but it is more difficult than he anticipates after he himself, suddenly becomes with some less than savoury company. What is in the missing envelope from Mr Oldfield’s safe, and why did someone almost kill him to get to it? Why is Phil suddenly being threatened for information about its whereabouts by various groups of people? The past and present come together to answer these, and many other questions in this enthralling mystery novel.
Barry Litherland did a wonderful job with the development of the characters in this story, especially as the characters’ grow up from 9-year-old children to adults, scarred by their childhood but continuing life in their own ways despite what they experienced as children. This book is almost impossible to put down until the very end, with surprises and plot twists around every corner.
There are no negative aspects for me to mention. I thoroughly enjoyed every part of this riveting work.
I am rating Waves Break (On Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland 4 out of 4 stars. The book seems to have been professionally edited, and the story was very engaging from the start through to the very last page. There were only negligible errors that I could find, and they did not subtract from the positive experience of the book at all.
I would highly recommend this book to mature readers who enjoy crime novels and murder mysteries. There is quite a lot of profanity in the book, but it is necessary for the context of the story. Be aware that it might upset younger readers and those sensitive to this sort of thing.
