[Following is a volunteer review of "Fast Starting a Career of Consequence: Workbook" by Fred Sievert.]
Fast Starting a Career of Consequence: Workbook by Fred Sievert is a book that falls under the self-help genre. It speaks of the significant elements to be taken care of by Christians for career growth, especially if they are freshers or are re-entering the workforce after a gap. The book gives away numerous beneficial cues that can fast-track a productive and rewarding career no matter what your current position at work be. It emphasizes the need for and the ways of including Jesus as your partner at work. The writer believes that Christ is the best companion at work, and you can ascend the corporate ladder much faster with Him as your aide. Also, the author encourages you to include work matters into your everyday prayers and pursue blessings and guidance so that you can achieve your goal at a faster pace.
In the workbook, the writer has tried to and succeeded too to a great extent in his efforts to differentiate the words or terms of the corporate realm that are either misunderstood or erroneously assumed as the same otherwise. For instance, he explicitly tells the difference between the "mission" and "vision" of a company and explains what is "strategy" and what is "tactics". Also, he has tried to include various facets, such as finance, operations, marketing, analysis, etc. of the corporate setting that a career person should be aware of if he/she wants to stand out and escalate the job-market ladder.
The best aspect of the book is an assessment questionnaire given in its appendix, which is an excerpt from the author's other book on the same subject. This questionnaire can be utilized to identify the unique traits that an individual possesses. After completing the exercise and determining your personality traits, you can utilize those for your career advancement. The book contains valuable insight on personal development also. The author emphasizes that having a strong relationship with your family and friends is as important as your objective for professional growth. This section of the book is as useful for a non-Christian as it is for a follower of Christ.
Also, the key points and action steps given at the end of each chapter help the reader to fully gather the knowledge the author has tried to impart. After reading the book for the first time one can go to these portions, if required, in the future to revise the key steps rather than reading the whole book again. The editing of this book is above average with a couple of glitches.
On the flip side, the book can only be fully understood and practiced by a Christian or someone who is well versed with the Bible. If you don't fall under any of the above two categories, you should at least have read the author's other book on the topic mentioned earlier. The author says in the book, "Study the teachings of Jesus Christ, and live your life as He would have you live it." But a person who has no understanding of the teachings of Jesus will not be able to fully grasp this let alone practice it in day-to-day life.
The book will be really useful for those workers, either freshers or re-entrants to the workforce after a period, who believe in Christ and have Christian values. This book can be rated a 2 out of 4 stars for the guidance it is proposing to Christians and other biblical people, but cannot be given more since it is of not much help for non-Christians and atheists as it is for the Christian fraternity. A non-christian or an atheist who is ignorant about Bible verses can go and look for some other alternatives for expanding their career.
