By day he is alive but by night he is dead, yet somehow more alive than ever. Eric's diary started when he was leading a simple life with a girlfriend, a few good buddies, and a job as a professor. Waking up one morning in a beautiful woman's bed with a killer hangover, was just the start of Eric's new life. His unexpected vampiric changes created many new learning experiences and several deadly enemies. Once his enemies killed his new love, Eric swore to use his powers to find and kill those who have been hunting him. After opening a door to an unfamiliar world, Eric starts on a journey to hunt down his enemies. In the meantime, he makes new friends, completes impossible quests, finds love, and leads a life he never imagined possible.

Nightlord: Sunset by Garon Whited is a fiction book that follows Eric as he navigates a world filled with magic and religious leaders that have strayed from the light. As he hunts down the religious leader to blame for his loves death, both grow in strength and power. Eric encounters opportunities to help others while fighting his moral dilemma of being a killer by nature. It is with his friends and alliances with high-powered individuals that Eric finally gets the opportunity to change the fabric of the world for those he cares about most.

One of the aspects I liked most about the book is the openness of the diary style. The main character finds himself in a moral dilemma of needing to kill to survive but also needing to help others due to his nature. He finds a way to do both without regret and due to the style of the writing, the reader gets to learn about the thoughts of the main character. This helps the reader connect with the main character and understand the inner workings of his actions. I also really enjoyed the unique characters portrayed in this book that exists in this world. These characters, along with their unique characteristics were explained very well. This book is full of adventure, magic, battles, heroism, and a little bit of love. There is something for everyone and provides entertainment from start to finish.

One thing that irked me while reading was how casual the main character is with all of these changes. There was very little dialog or emotion regarding how much he changed in a very short amount of time. I think there could have been some sort of emotion regarding his entire life and world changing in such a short amount of time. The last item that could have been expanded upon is his romantic experiences. Eric is romantically involved with a few women throughout the book whom he claims he loves yet he is quick to leave them, either physically or emotionally with very little thought. It was difficult for me to feel the love between them, but possibly I have read too many romance novels.

I rate the book three out of four stars due to the excellent storyline and realistic characters and accuracy of the times. The disconnect I felt for the lovers is the only reason I will not rate this with an additional star, but I still recommend this book. Anyone who enjoys fiction, sci-fi, or a brave story of a hero with odds stacked against him will enjoy reading Nightlord: Sunset . This book is not for children but would be good for young adults and older. This is a very entertaining book that will capture one’s attention from the first page.
