Review of Twisted But True
High school students- Darren, Rick, Kieth and Ben, are on their way from a desert party, when they are involved in an accident. Due to his solicitous human nature, Darren tries to save the victims of the mishap. After witnessing the death of one of the victims (a young girl) he failed to rescue, Darren decides to take a career path that would enable him save lives, but would also expose him to the dark side of humanity.
Twisted but True by Darren Burch is a true crime novel with a blend of thriller, suspense and horror. The 35 chapter novel gives a detailed account of the life of a police officer (the author) and his 30 year experience on the police force. Each chapter sheds light not only on his professional life, but also on his personal life. Twisted but True is certainly not for the faint-hearted, as it takes one into the minds of real criminals and psychopaths, and provides graphic details of the many horrors a police officer encounters on the job.
I love how the author incorporates humor into the otherwise gruesome stories in each chapter. The comic relief is indeed necessary as the real stories told are so dark, that it would likely leave one in distress and puzzlement. Some of the stories actually left me begging the question 'could this possibly be real?' Twisted but True will definitely leave readers in awe, as well as a deep and profound appreciation for the law and its enforcement officers. The efforts of the police to 'protect and serve' (a quality well portrayed in this novel), even at the cost of their lives, is definitely something to be acknowledged and valued. Also, the true emotions of the author (his joys, disappointments and losses), are clearly perceived while reading this novel. This is a book that anyone can relate to.
I would like to commend the author on the impeccable editing of the book. The book is professionally edited with no typos or errors. I have gained a lot from reading this novel. It was quite insightful and also very engaging. There is no reason not to give this book 4 out of 4 stars. Anyone with a love for horror stories will find this book enjoyable. I also feel this book will serve as a guide to those who would like to take up law enforcement as a profession, as it contains honest accounts of some of the activities an enforcement officer must partake in.
This book is recommended to mature readers, as it contains violent and gruesome details. It also has a strong adult theme that is completely inappropriate for much younger readers.
